LP Gas Installations

By Registered Gas Practitioners in accordance with the relevant safety standards.

We install stoves, hobs, space heaters, water heaters, fireplaces, etc. from a small single cylinder installation to a multiple cylinder manifold installation.

In terms of the new legislation only qualified Gas Installers are permitted to work on gas installations. Our technicians have SAQCC qualifications and all our installations are done according to SANS 10087 regulations.

Every gas installation is pressure tested (including the appliance) according to the relevant standard and then a Certificate of Conformity (COC) is issued as required by law. The COC can then be passed on to your insurance company in order to comply with the law and regulations.

Below is a diagram to check whether your installation complies with the regulation.

A - 1m horizontally from doors and windows

B - 2m from Drains and Air Vents

C - 3m below windows, unless non combustible roof is installed between containers and windows

D - 3m from property boundary unless boundary is a Fire Wall

E - 5m away from a switchable electrical point i.e. plug socket, main power etc. (not a light)

Only Class 1 or 2 copper pipe can be used.

All pipes going through a wall must be sleeved.

Flexible hose may not be more than 2m and may not go through any wall or partition.

Why Use LP Gas

Besides being flexible, reliable and affordable, LPG can offer considerable economic and environmental benefits over the use of oil, solid fuel or electricity. Thanks to its reduced carbon emissions, LPG is environmentally cleaner which means that appliances therefore require less maintenance than with any other fuel.

With the rising cost of electricity in South Africa, gas is one of the alternatives that people are using, as not only a cost saving for their cooking and hot water, but also for its reliability. You are in control of whether you have gas or not.

LP Gas is the most versatile of fuels for cooking, heating and providing hot water. Few energy sources are purer or cleaner, producing controllable high temperatures with negligible emissions.

LPG energy can be used in many commercial applications and is ideal and economical for cooking and cooling equipment, space heaters, boilers and more.

Within the home and commercial enterprises, LPG can be used for cooking, heating and hot water. LPG provides immediate hot water, at the required temperature, 24 hours a day. Its efficient flame provides you with instant heat and therefore makes cooking easy, enjoyable and clean. LPG does not leave any residue, does not taint your food and helps to prolong the equipment's life span!

When using a LP Gas water heater (Geyser) you only use gas when you switch on a tap and when you close the tap you stop using gas (very economical).

In industry, LPG can be used for space and process heating, powering machinery, fuelling fork-lift etc.

In Civil Engineering LP Gas is used for heating bitumen for repairing and laying roads.

Because of its clean-burning qualities, LPG is ideal for a multitude of farming applications and is particularly beneficial where livestock is concerned.

LP Gas Regulations

On the 15 July 2009, the Minister of Labour published an amendment to the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993, in respect of the "Pressure Equipment Regulations" No. 32395.

The Pressure Equipment Regulation (PER) covers certain legal requirements for gas installations including who may carry out such work, and the issue of Certificates of Conformity (CoC).

With effect from the 1st October 2009, in terms of the OHS Act (PER), No person shall Install or remove a gas appliance or a gas system unless such a person is an authorised person. This includes uninstalling / decommissioning.

This will place an onus on you as a property owner to ensure that:
  1. You have a compliance certificate as required by law.
  2. You are aware that a new LP Gas compliance certificate will have to be issued as required by law when ownership changes.
  3. You do not have a non- compliant installation that could cost you thousands of rands in damage, apart from the possibility of severe fines for non-compliance.
  4. Your Home structure and House contents insurance may be repudiated for fire related claims in cases where a valid Compliance certificate does not exist, whether the fire was caused by an LP Gas installation or not.
  5. A new certificate of compliance must be issued when:
    • A new LP Gas appliance is installed.
    • An existing LP Gas installation is modified or altered.
    • There is a change of User of the LP Gas installation.
    • There is a change of ownership of the property where a Liquid Petroleum Gas installation exists.
    • Where a property is rented out, the Tenant (Change of user) requires his own Compliance Certificate (Insurance cover for the contents of the building). The original Compliance Certificate of the Landlord remains valid for the Landlord provided no changes to the originally certified installation has been made (Insurance Cover for the Building Structure). This is not just an insurance requirement but a legal one.
LP Gas General Safety

LPG is non-toxic.

LPG vapour is heavier than air. Any leakage will sink to the ground and accumulate in low-lying areas.

Do not store cylinders below ground level.

LPG is flammable. It must be stored away from sources of ignition and in a well-ventilated area.

Do not try to detect leaks with a naked flame. Leakages can be detected by applying a soapy solution.

Regularly check your hose for signs of damage or cracking.

Only use hoses and other equipment specifically designed for LPG.

Replace the hose and clips every 2 years with approved types.

Replace pigtails every 5 years with approved types.
